Wolves in Luxembourg

The Luxembourg Nature and Forests Agency (Administration de la nature et des forêts, ANF) has confirmed the appearance of a wolf in the country. The predator was spotted in the Kiischpelt-Clervaux region on Friday and its presence was confirmed by photographs taken from two different locations.

Specialists analysed key features: body structure, muzzle shape, coat colour and behaviour - and came to an unequivocal conclusion. However, the current location of the animal is unknown. An official statement from the ANF emphasised: "At this stage, it is not possible to determine whether the wolf has remained in Luxembourg or crossed the country on its way."

This is not the first occurrence of a wolf in the Grand Duchy: sporadic sightings have been recorded from time to time since 2017. In contrast to neighbouring Belgium (in particular the Hautes Fagnes region) and the Netherlands, no stable packs have been recorded in Luxembourg so far.

The agency urges the public to be vigilant and asks to report any sightings to a special address: wolf@anf.etat.lu. At the same time, ANF emphasises that wolves generally avoid contact with humans and very rarely engage in direct interaction.

The presence of the wolf is not only a natural fact, but also an indicator of ecosystem changes. Its return to the region can be seen as a sign of wildlife recovery, but at the same time it requires the public to be responsible, attentive and aware of basic safety rules.
