Luxembourg announced benchmarks for 2025
On 19 December 2024, a virtual meeting of the Benelux Committee of Ministers was held, marking the transition of the presidency from Belgium to Luxembourg. Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel, his Belgian counterpart Bernard Quintin and the Dutch representative Caspar Veldkamp took part in the discussions. Summarising the work of the Belgian side, Xavier Bettel highlighted the achievements in the areas of the internal market, the environment, cross-border co-operation and security, expressing gratitude for the successful co-operation.
During the meeting, Bettel outlined three key areas for Luxembourg's presidency:
- Integration and innovation to strengthen the economy and increase prosperity.
- Cooperation with border regions to strengthen links with neighbouring territories.
- Protection and security of citizens, including countering cyber threats and strengthening legal security.
These priorities reflect Luxembourg's desire to ensure sustainable growth and greater interaction between the countries of the region.
During the meeting, the ministers formally adopted a new action plan for the period 2025-2028. The document sets out strategic objectives for the next four years, including the development of green technologies and digitalisation, deepening integration and supporting sustainable development. Benelux continues to demonstrate its role as a model of successful regional co-operation, where common market policies are combined with security and social protection priorities.
