The President of the Luxembourg Parliament, Claude Wiseler, expressed concern about the growing pressure on democracy both internationally and domestically. He stressed that democracy must be protected by active measures, including transparency, educational initiatives and open dialogue. Wiseler noted, "It is better to argue in parliament than to see riots in the streets."

According to a recent poll, only 65 per cent of young people in Luxembourg believe democracy is the best form of government. Wiseler called this figure alarming, as democracy is no longer taken for granted. In response, he suggested that young people should be more actively involved through meetings with pupils and open educational events in order to promote a better understanding of the principles of democracy and increase their trust in it.

To improve the efficiency of parliamentary work, a reorganisation has been introduced from January 2025:

  • Fixed schedules for commission meetings have been established to avoid overlaps and meeting cancellations.
  • The number of plenary weeks has been reduced, but the meetings themselves will become fuller, with morning and afternoon sessions.

These changes are aimed at making the legislative process more transparent and easier for citizens to understand.

Wiseler emphasised the importance of maintaining the country's political stability despite the difficult international environment. He noted that in neighbouring countries such as France, Germany and Belgium, political processes are often accompanied by protests and instability. Luxembourg should serve as an example of stability and respect for democratic norms.

"We need to protect our democracy and our way of life," Wiseler summarised, adding that openness to society and political education will help prevent negative scenarios and build citizens' trust in state institutions.
