The Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies has officially approved the appointment of former Health Minister Paulette Lenert to the Council of State, thereby bringing her term in parliament to an early end. As Lenert was the only candidate for the post, there was no need for the customary vote among MPs.
Although the politician will continue to perform her duties as an MP until she is officially sworn in, she has already addressed her colleagues with a brief speech. Lenert described this step as a “highly emotional moment” and expressed her deep gratitude for her experience in the chamber, emphasising that all discussions and disagreements had always taken place in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
Lenert, representing the LSAP, was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in October 2023. However, prior to taking up her parliamentary duties, she served in the government for five years, where she was successively responsible for development cooperation, consumer protection and health. In the State Council, she will replace lawyer Yves Wagener, who has decided to step down after six years of service in that body.
Lenert’s move to the Luxembourg legislature is expected to bring about inevitable changes. It is highly likely that her parliamentary seat will pass to Ben Streff. He is next in line on the LSAP party list for the Eastern constituency and is set to take the vacant seat in the Chamber of Deputies.
