On Tuesday afternoon, the Kirchberg Conference Centre will host the first meeting in a long time between the Luxembourg government and key social partners: the Union of Luxembourg Enterprises (UEL) and the country’s leading trade union federations—the OGBL, LCGB and CGFP. This meeting will serve as a preparatory stage for full-scale tripartite negotiations scheduled for June.

The economic consequences of the war in Iran are expected to be the central topic of discussion. Prime Minister Luc Frieden emphasised that the agenda would focus on measures necessitated by the military conflict, though he acknowledged the right of partners to propose their own initiatives. During the meeting, the National Institute of Statistics (STATEC), together with the Government Commissioner for Energy, Simeon Hagspiel, will present the latest macroeconomic data, which will form the basis for future policy decisions.

Despite the government’s focus on energy security, the trade union alliance intends to press hard for a structural increase in the minimum wage. Workers’ representatives believe that the current geopolitical instability calls for an immediate adjustment to people’s incomes. To underline their intentions, the OGBL and LCGB are organising a large-scale rally that evening in Dommeldange. The event at the Parc Hotel is intended not only to mobilise trade union members but also to demonstrate to the government the seriousness of their demands for a review of the pay scale ahead of the main round of negotiations.
