Belval parking lot is overflowing
The popularity of the car park is due to the introduction of new systems such as automatic number plate reading, online payment and free use for public transport passengers. However, even with these improvements, the total number of available season tickets has been reduced, with a limit of 500 for individuals and companies.
After the fire in February 2024, the occupancy rate reached 80% in March, and by November 2024 it reached a record 99.6%. This emphasises the complexity of the situation: despite having a season ticket, there is no guarantee of a parking space.
Transport Minister Yuriko Backes emphasised that the CFL is taking measures to optimise the distribution of seats among different categories of users. These measures include regulating the number of available season tickets and prioritising the right to a free seat for those who use multimodal transport.
The Belval car park is a reflection of the growing challenges of urban mobility in Luxembourg. Efforts to improve its management are ongoing to meet the needs of all users. However, so far, the authorities' desire to shift as many people as possible to public transport is facing infrastructural costs.
