Dogs should not be brought at the fair

The staging of Luxembourg’s largest fair, the Schueberfouer, has reignited public debate over whether pets should be allowed at noisy mass events. Whilst many dog owners are convinced that their pets can adapt to crowds provided they are kept under constant supervision, veterinary experts take a firmly negative view of this practice.

According to surgeon Tom Conzemius, the conditions at the fair place the animals under excessive sensory stress. External stimuli trigger an acute stress response in dogs, which is physiologically manifested by rapid breathing and shortness of breath. Brachycephalic breeds, particularly French Bulldogs, which have inherent anatomical characteristics of the respiratory tract, are at the greatest risk. In their case, severe stress in crowded conditions can lead to critical breathing difficulties or a complete cessation of breathing.

Experts emphasise that, unless you are absolutely certain how your pet will react to such an environment, you should leave the animal at home. Dog fairs lack the factors necessary for dogs’ wellbeing, whereas their usual walks in parks, woods or open countryside provide the necessary level of activity without posing a risk to their health.
