Luxembourg has set ambitious climate targets
On 17 December 2024, Luxembourg's Minister of Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, Serge Wilmes, responded to a parliamentary enquiry on the country's climate policy and its compliance with international obligations.
Comparing his situation with the case before the European Court of Human Rights against Switzerland, the Minister emphasised that Luxembourg's climate policy does not have similar shortcomings. Moreover, the measures adopted at the European Union level to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 have already been implemented and respected in Luxembourg.
The National Climate Strategy builds on the updated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNEC) and the long-term strategy "Towards Neutrality by 2050". Special attention is paid to annual quotas for greenhouse gas emissions, as well as to the Social Climate Plan aimed at protecting vulnerable populations, which will be developed in 2025.
