Luxembourg steps up the fight for equality and inclusion in advertising
On 16 December 2024, Equality Minister Yuriko Backes met with representatives from the Commission on the Ethics of Advertising (CLEP) to discuss the role of advertising in shaping public perceptions of gender and diversity.
During the meeting, the parties emphasised the importance of advertising that builds trust with the audience without using stereotypes and sexism. Yuriko Backes noted:
"Challenging clichés and sexism is a key part of the ministry's work, because positive representations of people contribute to an inclusive society where everyone feels accepted."
CLEP, the independent body that regulates compliance with the Code of Ethics in Advertising, expressed gratitude for the Ministry's willingness to foster collaboration and broad outreach to all actors in the advertising sector. CLEP representatives noted:
"Communication ethics is a right of the audience. To secure it, education of all parties is necessary."
CLEP is governed by the principles of the International Chamber of Commerce and ensures that advertising adheres to standards of integrity and respect. Increased co-operation with the ministry is intended to increase attention to diversity and gender equality in advertising.
