Luxembourg wants to build inclusive playgrounds
The Luxembourg government sees inclusion as a key policy objective, especially for children. The main message is to ensure equal opportunities for all, regardless of physical limitations. This is supported by a number of initiatives, including the adoption of a law on accessibility of public spaces in 2022. This law created a legal framework for improving infrastructure aimed at creating a barrier-free environment.
However, the law does not yet apply directly to playgrounds. Nevertheless, the government recognises their importance as part of an inclusive society. Inclusive playgrounds enable children with disabilities to participate in community activities and play on an equal basis with others.
National statistics on the number of such playgrounds are not currently available. This can make it difficult to assess the current situation and to plan. However, local municipalities play a crucial role in the realisation of accessibility projects. The Luxembourg government sees them as key partners and promises to support them through information, training and assistance in implementing practical measures.
These efforts are in line with Luxembourg's obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The authorities aim to further develop initiatives to create accessible infrastructure, including in the leisure sector.
