Sale season in Luxembourg

The summer sales season officially began in Luxembourg on Wednesday, offering shoppers the chance to buy goods at reduced prices. The highlight of the first weekend was the annual street fair in the municipality of Mersch, traditionally held to mark the start of the sales season. Despite the heat, the stalls selling clothes, jewellery and home décor attracted a large number of visitors. Some shoppers noted that they had come not only to find good deals, but also to support local businesses.

At the same time, traditional retail continues to face pressure from online platforms, to which some customers are turning in search of cheaper goods. However, high-street shops retain their customer base thanks to the opportunity to try on and test products before purchasing. For the retail sector, particularly in the fashion industry, the current sales are crucial for freeing up warehouse space and raising funds for new collections. Marc Herber, President of the Luxembourg Fashion Federation (FEMO), described the past trading season as challenging. He emphasised that, due to a slump in sales and the recent heatwave, retailers are left with significant stock levels across all sizes, offering shoppers a wide choice whilst prices are at their lowest.

The weather also had a direct impact on the distribution of footfall. Large indoor shopping centres, equipped with air-conditioning systems, saw an influx of visitors seeking refuge from the heat. To meet demand, many shops operated on a special Sunday opening schedule, welcoming customers from 14:00 to 18:00. The official summer sales period will end on 18 July.
