Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Lex Delles and Minister of Environment, Climate and Biodiversity Serge Wilmes have confirmed that Luxembourg plans to recycle the heat generated by data centres.
According to them, some operators are already utilising residual heat from servers, while other projects in this area are just developing. For example:
- In Bettembourg, LuxConnect intends to use heat to warm new buildings.
- In Bissen, LuxConnect uses heat from a nearby Kiowatt plant to cool servers.
Under the new EU Energy Efficiency Directive, large data centres will be required to monitor, report and transfer heat either to use it themselves or to transfer it for other uses.
The government has acknowledged that national estimates of the thermal potential of data centres are not yet available, but in the future such data will be included in a national thermal inventory and used in city and national planning.
