European statistics record contradictory dynamics in the pure electric vehicle market in 2024. On the one hand, sales of new all-electric passenger cars fell by 6.1 per cent to 1.45 million compared to 1.55 million in 2023. On the other hand, the number of such vehicles on EU roads rose by an impressive 32.4 per cent: from 4.43 million to 5.87 million.
The share of electric vehicles among all new registrations also fell, to 13.6 per cent, down 1 percentage point from 2023. This is the first decline since the steady growth that began in 2018, when the share of electric vehicles barely exceeded 1 per cent.
Against the backdrop of a slowdown in the all-electric car market, hybrid sales are showing growth. Almost 4 million new hybrids will be registered in the EU in 2024, an increase of 12.7 per cent. While plug-in hybrids also declined (-6.5%), standard hybrid models were the main gainers.
The most notable concentration of new electric vehicles was recorded in Denmark (51.3% of all new registrations), Malta (37.7%) and Sweden (34.9%). In the opposite situation were Croatia (1.8%), Slovakia (2.4%) and Poland (3.0%), where electric traction is still a niche market.
As for other types of electric vehicles, electric trucks showed significant growth: heavy trucks increased by 39.7%, tractors by 35.5%, and buses and coaches by 28.2%. However, the total number of new electric commercial vehicles fell by 6.8% over the year, due to a decline in the light truck category (-10.8%).
