CFL has reported record results for 2025: 31.4 million passengers used its train services, an increase of 0.6% on the previous period. The company’s CEO, Marc Wengler, noted that passenger numbers have more than doubled over the past 20 years, with the result that the capacity of some lines has reached its limit during peak hours. To address this issue, the operator has already started using longer trains on the busiest routes, including the Sillon Lorrain transit route. In addition, a new railway line is scheduled to open next year, which will double capacity between Bettembourg and the capital.

At the same time, the group’s financial performance showed steady growth: CFL’s turnover rose to €1.3 billion, whilst net profit reached €35.3 million. The bulk of these funds was directed towards expanding the network and renewing the rolling stock, with investment in infrastructure alone exceeding €327 million. Despite a parallel improvement in the customer satisfaction index to 3.84 out of 5, overall train punctuality fell slightly — from 90.8% to 89.6%. The company’s management attributes this decline to strikes in neighbouring countries, as well as to construction work in the Howald area and on the southern section of the capital’s central station.

Nevertheless, major infrastructure works will continue to disrupt services over the next 18 months. The new strategic line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg is due to enter service in autumn 2027, although the final stage of its connection will require the complete closure of this route for several weeks in summer 2027. Alongside track modernisation, the company must respond to criticism from cyclists complaining about a lack of space for transporting bicycles during peak hours. CFL hopes to resolve this issue by introducing new high-capacity carriages and expanding the network of dedicated bike racks at stations.
