Luxembourg's Minister of Transport and Public Works, Juriko Backes, in her response to a parliamentary enquiry, described the decision to build a new rapid tram stop in the Steebrécken/Wickreng area. The initiative is linked to a major development of the area, including job creation and improved transport accessibility.

The Steebrécken neighbourhood is being actively developed. According to the studies carried out, there are plans for the area:

  • Creation of 3,000-4,000 new jobs;
  • Construction of a hotel with 133 rooms and 150 residential flats;
  • Opening of new restaurants, shops and 1300m² for events;
  • Organisation of infrastructure for vehicle control.

This will lead to a significant increase in traffic flow in the region, making the tram stop a strategically important element of the transport system.

The initial feasibility study was completed in September 2024, after which political discussions with mayors and representatives of municipalities (Suessem, Esch/Uelzecht, Schëffleng and others) decided to launch the detailed design of the stop.

In addition, the project includes a bus station to provide access to the area for residents of neighbouring communities (Bierchem, Éileng, Recken/Mess).

Since work began in the Steebrécken area in 2008, several major projects have been realised:

  • Relocation of petrol stations in 2008 and 2015;
  • Construction of two new tunnels under the A4 motorway in 2018;
  • Reconstruction of motorway entrances and exits.

The construction work will be continued by Félix Giorgetti S.à r.l., which previously won the tender thanks to favourable conditions.
