On Wednesday, the European Parliament approved a reform that tightens asylum rules and regulations in the Union. This transformation should put an end to the 8-year period of instability in the legal field. Politicians consider this step a great victory, NGOs — a step backwards and a defeat in the fight for human rights.

The main innovation will be the regular screening of third-country nationals staying in the EU and applying for protection and asylum. If migration laws have been violated, such refugees will be sent back to the countries of which they are citizens.

Of course, there was immediate discontent. In particular, civil society activists called the signed pact inhumane, because it will bring more suffering and human sacrifice. Nevertheless, the document was approved and the law is expected to take effect in the summer of 2026.
