The European Commission has opened a formal investigation into Chinese online platform Temu, suspecting it of violating the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA). Founded by PDD Holdings in 2022, Temu is also suspected of selling illegal goods and using elements that can lead to addiction, such as game rewards that encourage repeat purchases. Its recommendation algorithms and access to data for researchers will also be scrutinised.

The decision to launch an investigation follows requests from the Commission in June and October for action on illegal goods. In May, BEUC complained to the European Commission and national regulators about manipulation and lack of consumer protection on the platform.

Temu, which was recently granted Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) status under the DSA, said it takes its obligations seriously and intends to cooperate with regulators to ensure user safety.
