Grand Duchy to help with outbreak in Africa
Following the declaration of the Marburg virus epidemic in Rwanda on 27 September 2024, the Government of Luxembourg responded promptly by activating the European Civil Protection Mechanism. The result was 330 pallets of medical equipment and personal protective equipment, which were delivered to the country on 3 December 2024.
The situation with the Marburg virus is of serious concern: the high lethality of the infection and its rapid spread require an immediate response. Luxembourg, by co-financing supplies with the European Union, aims to protect health workers who are on the front line of the fight against the virus and at the same time prevent the further spread of the disease.
These efforts were coordinated by several entities, including the Luxembourg Ministry of Health, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps, and private partners. The work was supported by the Luxembourg Embassy in Rwanda.
This case also raises the need for global health systems to be strengthened to deal with new outbreaks. The supplies to Rwanda are yet another example of European nations and their partners working together in a time of urgency.
The fight against the Marburg virus is not just a localised problem in Africa. It points to the need for widespread preparation and coordinated action to protect global health and meet the challenges of new epidemics.
