SpaceX will launch a satellite for Luxembourg
The LUXEOSys satellite is being built as part of Luxembourg's ambitious programme to develop Earth observation technologies. The project is of strategic importance for the country's defence, providing independent access to high-resolution data. The satellite will also contribute to NATO's joint efforts to share intelligence data.
Luxembourg has chosen SpaceX as a partner for a satellite launch planned for the first half of 2025. Alternatives offered by a NATO member state were not economically viable and did not guarantee reliable logistics. SpaceX was the obvious choice due to its combination of affordable cost and impeccable reputation in commercial launches. The decision was confirmed during a presentation to the Parliament's Defence and Budget Committees on 5 February 2024.
The LUXEOSys satellite reflects Luxembourg's commitment to strengthening defence capabilities and technological independence. It also demonstrates a long-term economic policy: the efficient allocation of defence resources, taking into account global trends. In the international context, SpaceX remains the leader among commercial providers, making Luxembourg's choice part of a general trend of states using private companies to access space.
This project strengthens the country's position as a technological leader and a reliable partner in NATO. The satellite will provide better access to key data for joint missions and raise Luxembourg's profile on the international stage.
