In 2014, Mischo entered the political arena, securing a position on the municipal council of Esch-sur-Alzette.

Progressing swiftly, he assumed the role of Mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette in 2017. After the October 14, 2018, legislative elections, Mischo entered the Chamber of Deputies, securing re-election in 2023. However, his trajectory took a new turn as he was appointed Minister of Sports and Minister of Labor, prompting his departure from the Chamber of Deputies.

Achievements

During his tenure as Mayor of Esch-sur-Alzette, Georges Mischo faced a challenging backdrop marked by a poly-crisis, encompassing the initial waves of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent war in Ukraine. Despite these adversities, Mischo expressed satisfaction with the achieved results. By early 2021, halfway through his term, two-thirds of the projects outlined in the coalition program were completed. As of 2023, he proudly claims the successful realization of 120 projects.

Finance

Noteworthy is Mischo's adept management of financial constraints during crises. Despite the challenges, the average investment during his term stood at 65.2 million euros annually, a substantial increase compared to the previous coalition's average of 33.5 million euros per year. A standout success was the Esch-Sur-Alzette European Capital of Culture 2022, a major event that persevered through difficulties, contributing significantly to the region's cultural and touristic appeal.

Esch2022

Esch2022 hosted over 1,350 events and 3,145 activities, with 80% taking place within Luxembourg. The positive impact extended to cultural infrastructure, benefitting several municipalities. The cultural year attracted 512,000 visits, a remarkable figure considering the region's population of 210,000. Mischo's leadership ensured the success of the CSV-Déi Gréng-DP coalition, emphasizing seamless collaboration and effective communication.

Professional activities and relationships

Georges Mischo's political journey commenced at the age of 36 when he joined the CSV in early 2011, demonstrating a commitment to the party's ideals and objectives.

Municipal politics

In his initial foray into municipal elections in 2011, Mischo secured the sixth position with 1938 votes, insufficient for any position. However, a strategic turn of events in 2014, marked by Marco Goetz's resignation and Mady Hannen's withdrawal, paved the way for M...

Chamber of deputes and governmental roles

After an unsuccessful bid in the 2011 municipal elections and a less-than-favorable outcome in the 2013 legislative elections, Mischo persisted. Buoyed by increased popularity garnered through his roles in the Esch-sur-Alzette municipal council (2014) and mayoralty (2017), Mischo triumphed in the 2018 legislative elections, securing a seat in the Chamber of Deputies, a pivotal moment in his political career.

As of 2023, Mischo, poised to continue his role as a deputy after successful reelection, faced an unexpected turn of events. His trajectory shifted dramatically when he was appointed Minister of Sports and Minister of Labor in the Frieden-Bettel coalition government, highlighting the culmination of his political prowess and the beginning of a new chapter in governmental responsibility.

Political views and support

As a member of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), Georges Mischo aligns himself with the party's values and ideals. The CSV, with a social Christian orientation, grounds its social policies in the principles of solidarity, freedom, peace, fairness, family, and subsidiarity. Importantly, it emphasizes that, despite being guided by Christian values, it is not a confessional party.

Mischo resonates strongly with the CSV's social policies, holding a particular appreciation for grassroots connections. During his 2017 municipal election campaign, he was perceived as approachable and attentive, a quality he maintained after the election, actively listening to constituents' concerns.

In terms of political and economic orientation, Mischo follows the CSV's stance, situated on the center-right of the political spectrum. The party advocates for a social market economy, emphasizing state intervention to ensure fair competition, good working conditions, social welfare, family well-being, and low unemployment while maintaining a high economic growth rate. The CSV is generally considered conservative on cultural, social, and moral issues.

Mischo's popularity has experienced a remarkable ascent. Initially facing challenges in the 2011 communal elections and 2013 legislative elections, his perseverance paid off with entry into the Esch communal council in 2014 and subsequently securing the mayoralty in 2017. This success propelled him to deputy status in 2018, garnering 17,688 votes, a number that surged to 25,388 in 2023. Beyond voter popularity, Mischo enjoys esteem within political circles, evident in his recent appointment as a minister, reflecting the broader support for his leadership and political principles.

Criticism of the politician

In the realm of politics, criticism is a constant, often reflecting divergent perspectives. In early 2023, the ADR voiced discontent with the results of the Esch2022 European Capital of Culture, held during Georges Mischo's tenure. According to the ADR, Esch2022 was deemed a missed opportunity for southern Luxembourg, perceived as an exclusive event that lacked widespread public participation.

Mischo defended the cultural initiative, emphasizing that a definitive assessment of Esch2022 was premature as the official figures were scheduled for release in May. Notably, not all shared the ADR's viewpoint. Sam Tanson of Déi Gréng highlighted the significance of Luxembourg's consistent investment in culture, stressing the cultural momentum generated in the South and expressing hope for its continuation.

With May having come and gone, the study results are now available, portraying Esch2022 in a positive light and thus mitigating some of the earlier criticisms. As previously discussed in the achievements section, the study shows a positive overall impact of the cultural event.

Personal life

Georges Mischo, the only child of Josy Mischo, hails from a family with a political legacy. Josy Mischo, his father, had a political trajectory that abruptly concluded in 1999 due to conflicts with the CSV. The discord surfaced as early as 1993 when a vacancy emerged on the council. Despite the opportunity for Josy Mischo to enter the échevinal college, he, as the sole worker without formal education, found himself restricted to unions and committees. In 1999, with the CSV securing seven seats, Josy Mischo should have become the mayor, but he claimed attempts to sideline him persisted. Frustrated with the situation, he exited politics, depriving the CSV of its first chance to claim the mayoralty in Esch.

Beyond the somewhat bitter political history of his father, Georges Mischo's private life reveals that he is currently married and has two children, adding a personal dimension to his multifaceted identity beyond the political arena.
