Despite economic turbulence and global challenges, the European Union maintained a strong position in the international tourism industry in 2023, generating 25.9% of global tourism receipts. Almost two-thirds of this amount - 15.2% - was generated by tourism within the EU itself, underlining the importance of internal mobility on the continent. The remaining 10.7% was generated by visitors from outside the EU.

Looking at the data for individual EU states, the top countries in the global ranking of tourism receipts were Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Austria, Greece, the Netherlands, Croatia and Poland. Each of them collected at least 1% of global tourism receipts.

In comparison, among non-EU countries, the United States remains the most prominent player with a share of 12.3%. The UK, despite Brexit, is second among non-European countries with 4.8%, which is noticeably ahead of other countries.
