How soon Luxembourg will switch to hydrogen fuel
Luxembourg continues to actively develop hydrogen energy. At a meeting of the Parliamentary Commission on Economy and Energy, Bill 8298 was presented, which aims to create a national hydrogen infrastructure network under the control of the Luxembourg Institute of Regulation (ILR).
The government has signed memoranda with Belgium and the Sarr region to secure hydrogen supplies from neighbouring countries. At the same time, Luxembourg is exploring opportunities to participate in solar power projects in Southern Europe and offshore wind farms in the North Sea.
Minister of Energy Lex Delles emphasised that hydrogen is still used minimally in Luxembourg, mainly transported to companies by lorries. The focus is on research and development in this field. The possibility of industrial production of hydrogen will be considered in case of availability of surplus electricity.
A hydrogen network can be built on the basis of existing gas networks or by modernising outdated infrastructures. Despite the high cost of the technology, hydrogen is seen as a tool for decarbonising industry and, in the future, for transport, including freight transport and rail routes.
Luxembourg is preparing a €400 million subsidy package to support hydrogen projects. The conditions for accessing the funding will be defined in a separate piece of legislation.
