From 1 April 2027, fifty of the sixty-eight farmers belonging to the Prolek agricultural co-operative will begin supplying milk to the Luxembourg-based company Luxlait. Official confirmation of this agreement was published on Wednesday. The farmers signed the relevant contract with Solarec, in which Luxlait is a shareholder.
The compromise reached will help to protect the incomes of dairy farmers and their families. However, Luxlait’s management notes that this move entails additional costs and commercial risks for the company. The company emphasises that the long-term success of the initiative will depend directly on the ability of Luxembourg’s domestic market to support and develop its own food and agricultural sector.
The need to urgently find new sales channels for local producers arose around five months ago. At that time, the French corporation Lactalis, which also owns the EKABE brand, officially announced that it would completely cease purchasing raw materials from all 68 farms belonging to the Prolek cooperative after 31 March 2027.
