Forest fire prevention in Luxembourg

Against the backdrop of the heatwave, the relevant authorities have issued an official warning about the high risk of fires. In light of this, members of the public are urged to exercise greater vigilance and social responsibility, as even the slightest carelessness could trigger a large-scale fire.

Experts emphasise the need for strict adherence to basic safety rules. First and foremost, residents are strongly advised to refrain from lighting open fires outdoors and not to throw cigarette ends on the ground. At the same time, the use of barbecues is permitted only in areas specifically designated for this purpose. It is also essential to always have fire-extinguishing equipment to hand, such as containers of water. Furthermore, it is strictly forbidden to dispose of hot embers — these may only be disposed of in designated areas once they have cooled completely.

The notice places particular emphasis on safety precautions for motorists. Drivers should avoid driving onto meadows, fields or into woodland. This restriction is due to the fact that accidental sparks or contact between dry vegetation and hot parts of the vehicle’s underbody could cause an instant fire. In addition, members of the public are asked not to park their cars at the entrances to forest and country lanes, to ensure unhindered access for fire crews in the event of an emergency.

If a fire does break out, the top priority is to evacuate immediately to a safe area. You should then contact the emergency services straight away on 112. When calling the dispatcher, you must state your location as precisely as possible, using any special rescue signs in the forest as a guide, if available, and, where possible, indicate the most convenient access routes for the arriving rescue teams.
