Carnival in Esch: record participants and thousands of spectators under a spring sky

Southern Luxembourg was once again at the mercy of Carnival in March. Following the parades in Dikirch and Schifflange, Sunday 16 March was the day of a lavish parade in Esch, a tradition that, according to the locals, grows stronger every year.
The festive day was truly spring-like, with blue skies, bright sunshine and colourful costumes providing the backdrop for the 24th cavalcade that completed the four-day programme. "Esch is a big carnival capital," noted Pedro Oliveira of the city's tourism office in an interview with RTL. "Every year we attract between 20,000 and 30,000 people. But this year, thanks to the good weather, we expect to break the record."
Indeed, the number of participants grew to 68 groups, an all-time record, up from the previous 60. The streets were filled with colourful birds, dancers, pink Barbies, sushi masters and cowboys, while Americans handed out candy instead of taxes, which was the image chosen by the participants of one of the platforms.
The atmosphere was full of music, sweets and alcohol - in the best tradition of carnival madness. "Eschturned into a masquerade town this weekend," Oliveira concludes.
The fun parade in Esch is not just a celebration of costumes - it is living proof of how cultural traditions unite generations and turn ordinary streets into a stage for fantasy and joy.
