A supergroup is a musical band that includes several celebrities or members of other bands. The term originated in the 60s, during the golden age of various rock styles. The world's first supergroup was the band Cream. Other popular supergroups you may know are Audioslaves, A Perfect Circle or The Good, the Bad & The Queen.
Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp made friends during the shooting of "Dark Shadows" in 2012. Three years later, in 2015, the band Hollywood Vampires was founded. Back in the 70s, Alice Cooper started a club for his friends called the Hollywood Vampires. This was a special fellowship for some of the most iconic stars of the 20th century, including Ringo Starr, John Lennon, Keith Moon, and many others. They used to meet at the famous Rainbow Grill on Sunset Street to have some fun and a few drinks.
So, Cooper and Depp decided to have the same name for the band to recreate the atmosphere of this club.
Music with style
At first, the Vampires played covers of their favourite songs. Depp had always claimed that he could never (and would never) sing. But with the Hollywood Vampires, the talented actor finally decided to pick up a microphone. And well done! Check out his amazing cover of David Bowie's Heroes on YouTube.
The Hollywood Vampires also played covers of The Who, T-Rex, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, and many others. These famous compositions were included in the band's first album, not too surprisingly called Hollywood Vampires. The debut LP was released in September of 2015.
The band's next piece — Rise — was released four years later in 2019. Its thirteen songs written by the band, as well as a cover of Heroes by Johnny Depp and two covers by Johnny Saunders and Jim Carroll, turned out to be a deeper and more meaningful piece of work. Instrumental compositions and interludes have added to the artistic value of the album.
In a world of fast-paced musical trends, it's hard to find a true rock'n'roll band. But Hollywood Vampires are one of them. Paying tribute to a past era and their favorite style, the musicians have also found their own sound, which has been warmly welcomed by somewhat nostalgic music lovers.
