On 11 February 2025, International Women & Girls in Science Day, Luxembourg will officially launch the 4th season of the Women & Girls in Science campaign. This is an initiative aimed at attracting women to science and breaking gender stereotypes.
The programme is supported by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Diversity (MEGA), the Ministry of Research and Higher Education, the Foundation for National Research (FNR), the University of Luxembourg and Research Luxembourg. Minister Yuriko Backes and Minister of Science Stéphanie Obertin signed the agreement at the event.
Women are still under-represented in science. According to the European Commission (SHE Figures 2021), only 25% of researchers in Luxembourg are women, compared to an EU average of around 33%.
Minister Juriko Backes emphasised that diversity in science is not only a matter of equity, but also the key to better research and innovation. Stephanie Aubertin added that without women, the development of technology and society will be less inclusive.
Among the key initiatives of the campaign are:
- Six videos featuring Luxembourgian female researchers talking about their journey in science and career challenges.
- Active communication through social media to get the attention of girls and students.
- A mentoring and internship programme where female students will have the opportunity to work with experienced scientists and visit laboratories.
Women & Girls in Science offers undergraduate and graduate students personal mentoring from female researchers as well as internships in laboratories. The programme will include a final conference where the young scientists will have the opportunity to meet with academics and policy makers.
Wome Science has already proven its effectiveness: last year, the campaign generated more than 850,000 interactions on social media. The authorities plan to continue supporting women in science to make the field more inclusive and open.
Luxembourg continues to work actively to strengthen the position of women in research and technology, not only as a matter of equality but also as a key to a successful future of innovation.
