According to official statistics from the Ministry of Education, at the start of the school year 2025/2026, 178,771 students were registered in the Luxembourg education system, 6,000 more than a year earlier. Of these, 118,045 are enrolled in primary and secondary education, while the remainder are attending adult education or language courses at the National Institute of Languages.

In primary education (enseignement fondamental), public institutions enrolled 57,825 pupils, while public schools enrolled 5,610. A total of 63,435 children are enrolled in primary education. At the secondary level (enseignement secondaire), 44,132 pupils are enrolled in the public sector and 10,478 in the private sector. The total number of pupils at this level is 54,610. The number of schoolchildren in the country has thus increased by more than 2,900 compared to last year.

It is worth noting that the growth is mainly at the expense of public schools. At the same time, private institutions that do not follow the official programme of the Ministry of Education show a tendency to reduce the number of students at both primary and secondary levels. At the same time, the popularity of international programmes continues to grow.

The infrastructure for pre-school and out-of-school childcare is also developing in parallel. At the end of 2024, there were 71,353 places registered in various institutions, including nurseries, kindergartens and day care homes. This is 2,953 more places than in 2023, an increase of 4.3 per cent. The largest increase (+5.5%) is in subsidised structures.

The public primary education sector employs 6,520 teachers. Most of them (86.5 per cent) are civil servants and the rest are temporary or contractual employees. The secondary sector employs 6,011 teachers, with 67 per cent being civil servants, 32 per cent permanent contract staff and about 1 per cent temporary teachers.

Under the government's Chèque-Service Accueil (CSA) subsidy system, 59,596 residents and 3,701 children from cross-border families received assistance to pay for childcare in 2024. Coverage thus totalled 64.5 per cent of all children in the country.
