Almost 30,000 Luxembourg residents have officially opted out of becoming organ donors. According to Martine Deprez, the Minister of Health, 29,812 people had recorded their refusal through their electronic medical records by 24 April 2025. This represents around 4.4 per cent of the country's population, while 55,904 people have confirmed their consent to organ donation.
In 2024, seven multi-organ retrievals were performed in Luxembourg, resulting in 22 organs being successfully transplanted through the Eurotransplant network of medical centres in France, Belgium, and Germany. Between 100 and 120 people wait for organ transplants each year.
There are currently no plans to resume transplants in Luxembourg itself. Since 2009, patients have been sent abroad for treatment because the number of operations performed in Luxembourg is insufficient to establish its own organ transplant centre.
