In France and Luxembourg, an urgent recall has been launched for Morbier AOP cheese from Auchan Terroir. The reason is the presence of Escherichia coli shiga toxinogène (STEC) bacteria in the product, which can cause severe intestinal infections and, in rare cases, lead to serious complications, especially in children.
These are batches of 250g sold between 26 December 2024 and 19 February 2025. The shelf life of these cheeses ranges from 6 to 27 February 2025. Customers are asked to stop consuming this product immediately and return it to Auchan shops for a refund.
Escherichia coli STEC bacteria are a type of Escherichia coli capable of producing shigatoxin, which causes acute poisoning. Symptoms of infection can appear within a week of consuming a contaminated product. These include:
- Diarrhoea (bloody discharge may occur)
- Severe abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Fever (not always)
The greatest danger is that 5-8% of those who fall ill may experience severe complications, including acute kidney failure. Children, the elderly and immunocompromised people are at risk.
If the above symptoms occur after consuming Morbier AOP, you should contact your doctor immediately, informing him/her of the product, date of purchase and consumption.
However, if no symptoms appear within 10 days of use, there is no cause for concern - in this case, medical attention is not required.
