Orange warning in Luxembourg: water continues to arrive
Intense rainfall on Wednesday caused a rapid rise in river levels in the south of Luxembourg. The situation is particularly critical in the Alzette river basin, where water levels have exceeded the orange danger mark in the towns of Mersch, Ettelbrück and Bissen. According to the authorities, in Ettelbrück the water level is close to red and the peak is expected at midday or in the evening. Exact figures for the maximum level are not yet known.
An orange warning level has been issued throughout the country. In the districts of Hesperange, Pfaffenthal and Steinzel, water levels have either stabilised or continue to rise slightly. In the north of the country, rivers remain at critically high levels, which applies especially to Dikirch, Bollendorf and Bigonville. In these areas, the water level is not forecast to recede until Friday.
In the Moselle river valley, the threat of flooding also remains. In the Stadеbredimus area, the water level could reach the orange threshold of 620 cm by Friday. Authorities warn that the high water level on the Moselle will continue until Sunday afternoon.
The national meteorological service MeteoLux has issued an orange flood warning. It has been in effect since Thursday and will last until at least Friday morning for southern regions and noon for northern regions. Residents are advised to take precautions and follow updates on the situation.
Traffic disruptions and localised flooding of roads and coastal areas are possible, especially in areas with historically high flood risk. Authorities will have to prevent the effects from spreading if the rains continue.
