With heavy precipitation and snow turning to rain approaching, Luxembourg's services have met to assess the risk of flooding. An orange alert has been issued in most regions of the country (except the Moselle Valley).

Forecasters predict up to 30 litres of precipitation per square metre. The rise in water levels will start in the evening and last until Thursday.

Alzette River

Exceeding the orange alert level is expected around midnight. In areas such as Hesperange, Pfaffenthal, Steinzel, Mersch and Ettelbrück, water levels could reach the red mark.

River Sûre

An orange alert is expected at stations in Dikirch and Bollendorf from early Thursday morning.

Moselle River

Rising water levels are expected in the evening, but the orange alert is unlikely to be reached; a yellow danger level has been imposed.

Citizens are strongly encouraged to:

  • avoid travelling to regions at risk of flooding;
  • follow instructions on road closures and diversions routes;
  • follow updates on the official portals www.inondations.lu and www.meteolux.lu.

Authorities emphasise the importance of timely information through radio and television channels and urge caution when travelling in flooded areas.
