The Luxembourg Health Directorate (Direction de la santé) has published a weekly report on the development of acute respiratory infections, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19. The data show a positive trend of decreasing incidence for all three infections.
Between 10 and 16 February 2025 (week 7), the number of reported cases of influenza decreased by 21%, from 2,049 to 1,617. Despite this, the infection remains widespread among children and adolescents, but the decline in cases over the two weeks confirms that the peak of the epidemic has passed.
According to virus typing data, influenza A was identified in 40% of cases and influenza B in 60%. Among influenza A subtypes, 44.8% were A(H1)pdm9 and 55.2% were A(H3).
The incidence of RSV also decreased by 23 per cent, from 219 to 169 cases. The virus mainly affects infants and elderly people over 80 years of age, indicating the need for increased attention to vulnerable age groups.
The number of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) positive cases decreased by 5%, from 58 to 55 cases. Analysis of wastewater also shows a decrease in virus concentration, confirming the stabilisation of the epidemic situation.
According to the latest sequencing data, two sub-variants of JN.1, XEC (64.8%) and KP.3 (19.3%), were dominant in December 2024, indicating continued evolution of the virus.
