Textbook scandal in Luxembourg

The Imagine Luxembourg textbook, intended for French lessons in the 7th grade of general secondary education, was unexpectedly at the centre of a high-profile mishap. Instead of "Activité Orale" (oral task), several pages contained "Activité Anale". The error caused an outcry and an immediate reaction from the Ministry of Education.

According to the ministry's representatives, the approved handwritten version did not contain such typos at the time of printing. The problem arose solely at the stage of technical preparation of the 2025 reprint. As a result, the error, which was clearly unacceptable, was repeated on several pages.

Ministry spokeswoman Myriam Bamberg said: "These errors are unacceptable and have no place in a school textbook." She said the publisher, which is solely responsible for the incident, is already obliged to recall all the defaced copies and replace them with new ones. Legal steps against the publisher are also being considered.

Pupils and teachers have so far been given access to a digital version of the book, and a printed supplement is being discussed as an interim measure. Corrected copies are promised to be delivered "as soon as possible", but exact dates have not yet been given.

The incident is unlikely to have a serious impact on the educational process, but it has become a clear example of how a seemingly minor technical error can turn into a reputational crisis. After all, we are talking about school materials, where trust in the content must be absolute.
