The incident took place on the night of 18-19 January after leaving a nightclub. Two professional basketball players playing in the Luxembourg top league were charged with assault with a cold weapon. They fled the scene after the attack, but were apprehended by police shortly afterwards.
Immediately after the incident, the Luxembourg prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the case of attempted murder or intentional bodily harm. One of the suspects was placed in pre-trial detention and the other was released under judicial control.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing and charges have not been dropped against the suspects. According to the prosecutor's office, both basketball players are now under judicial control. The previously incarcerated player was released by an appeals court decision and also placed under judicial control.
Judicial control involves restrictions on freedom of movement, the obligation to appear for interrogations and court hearings, and a ban on contact with the victim.
The case has caused a wide resonance in the Luxembourg sports community, as both players are known for their achievements in the basketball arena. The names of the suspects are being withheld in accordance with privacy laws.
At this point, the investigation is ongoing and it is not yet clear when a final decision will be made on whether to take the case to trial or close the case.
