Historical overview

Before 1873, Pulvermühl and Hamm were sections of the Sandweiler commune. However, on December 20, 1873, Pulvermühl and Hamm were separated from Sandweiler to form the new commune of Hamm. It wasn't until 1920 that Pulvermühl became a neighborhood of Luxembourg City through the amalgamation of neighboring communes.

History of the name

The name 'Pulvermühl' or 'Polvermillen' in Luxembourgish translates to 'powder mill.' This nomenclature traces its roots to a mill on-site that initially ground charcoal for gunpowder production. Over time, the mill evolved, shifting its purpose to grain milling around 1795 and transforming into a cotton spinning mill by 1843.

Commerce age

In 1948, the site witnessed a shift as an international company specializing in traction and lifting equipment, along with a dry-cleaning facility, set up shop in the factory buildings. Presently, these facilities lie dormant, awaiting redevelopment as part of a revitalization project.
