20 Luxembourg soldiers arrive in Mali

Political and social tensions in Mali have increased in recent months. The Ministry of Defense reported that the Luxembourg army is participating in resolving the situation.

The military went to Mali partly as part of the EU Training Mission (EUTM), partly as part of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). The training mission is the training of local soldiers and police, and the mission of the UN is the protection of the population.

Not all countries undertake a mission to maintain order in Mali. For example, Germany has suspended its activities — just as tensions rose.
