Food prices increased during the year
According to the latest Statec report, the cost of food in February 2024 was 4% higher than in February 2023. This is in line with the inflation rate, which has slowed down but is still below the target.
However, it should be noted that many products have become less expensive compared to January 2024. This is particularly true for baby food, fresh fruit and vegetables. They lost 6%, 2.7% and 0.9% respectively. The overall picture is that food products were 0.5% cheaper in February. Olive oil (+3.4%), mineral water (+3.7%) and potatoes (+2%), which increased in price, contributed to this.
The upward trend in the cost of products is also partly due to the soaring prices of petroleum products. Gasoline and fuel prices rose for the second month in a row. In February, the price of diesel rose by 6.2% and gasoline by 4.5%.
