Pros and cons of living in the Strassen commune

Nestled away from the city's hustle, Steinsel's location strikes an ideal balance, offering tranquility yet ensuring quick access to the capital. This allure has led to a growing trend of families choosing Steinsel as their home. Another positive aspect is the affordability of real estate, both for purchase and rental, compared to the capital.

On the downside, despite excellent connectivity to the capital via a comprehensive bus network, prospective residents must weigh the charm of serenity against the convenience of urban mobility. Steinsel proves appealing to vehicle owners seeking a peaceful, natural environment. However, for those without personal vehicles, the convenience varies depending on daily commuting needs.

A notable drawback is the absence of secondary educational institutions, necessitating a journey to the capital for such facilities. Additionally, while Steinsel boasts sports and cultural facilities, the range of events and activities cannot match the capital's offerings. Potential residents must carefully assess these factors to determine if Steinsel aligns with their lifestyle preferences and daily requirements.

Historical overview

Steinsel underwent territorial adjustments in 1851 and 1853, losing sections to the creation of Walferdange and Kopstal communes, respectively, but overall, this territory has some historical sites to attract visitors and residents.

Roman ruins

Steinsel commune boasts a rich historical tapestry dating back to Roman times, evident in archaeological remnants like the foundations of a temple at Roellent and a substantial residential complex with thermal baths at the present-day Church Square. These ancient stone constructions likely contributed to the local nomenclature evolution from Petriasala to Skinzel, eventually becoming Steinsel.

Timely transformation

With the advent of Christianity, Steinsel transformed into a significant ecclesiastical center, featuring a parish encompassing vast territories. The Gothic-style church, constructed in 1854, stands as a testament to its religious evolution. In the agricultural domain, post-World War II, Steinsel gained prominence for strawberry, potato, and broad bean production and sales. The commune also hosted the Knights Templar at the former "Gonneschhoff" (now Villa Laval).

Mullendorf

Mullendorf's origins trace back to the "Moulin Bintz" on the Alzette, evolving from a modest settlement around a grain mill to a thriving locality. The presence of a second mill, "Moulin Werdel," until 1975, underscores the historical importance of grain mills in sustaining communities.

Heisdorf

Heisdorf, the third locality, boasts a storied past with an ancient castle once occupied by influential families, including Jean de Beck, marshal of the armies of Emperor Ferdinand II. Today, the renovated castle houses the Sisters of the Christian Doctrine.
