l’Overshoot Day: Luxembourg's unfortunate lead

If everyone consumes resources in 2023 the way a Luxembourg resident does, the planet's resources will be exhausted by February 14. The only country worse off in this indicator is Qatar.

Every year, the Global Ecological Footprint Network calculates these figures based on a variety of metrics: energy consumption, soil condition and use, plants and animal production. And the results are not promising — if all the people in the world lived and consumed natural resources as Grand Duchy does, it would be over. And resources, that can sustain a whole year would be used up by now.

Thus, to meet Luxembourg's demand, the equivalent of nearly eight planets would be needed. But this estimate of Luxembourg is frequently criticized for not taking into account the Grand Duchy's specificities: cross-border employees, gasoline tourism, etc.
