Luxembourg aiming to host Tour de France in 2027
Luxembourg’s own Bob Jungels took the 12th place in this year’s championship. Now Minister of Sports is in negotiations with the organizers of the Tour de France for the country to host the event in 2027.
Contrary to the name, the Tour de France does not necessarily take place in France. For example, in 2022 the race started in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. But the finish line is invariably the French Champs Elysees. Therefore, not every country can host the start of the famous cycling race at home — only the ones nearby. And they do compete for the right to start the Tour de France on their territory. The championship attracts numerous spectators. Which means it is economically beneficial for the region.
Bob Jungels won the 9th stage of the race in 2022, read all about it in our recent material. In the overall standings, he took the 12th place. This is a great opportunity to suggest Luxembourg as the starting point for one of the next championships. It would also be nice and helpful for the residents. With the approval of the Luxembourg government council, sports minister Georges Engel is discussing this matter with Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme and his team.
Engel chose the 2027 championship as the object of negotiations. The date is not accidental: in 1927, 100 years earlier, Luxembourg cyclist Nicolas Franz won the race. 2028 is also suitable: 100 years since Nicolas Franz’s second victory and 70 years since the triumph of another Luxembourger, Charlie Gaul in 1958. However, any year is acceptable for Luxembourg — as long as the Grand Duchy gets to host the championship.
We wish Georges Engel success in the negotiations!
