Choosing a country to move to is a complex and important decision. As part of a large-scale study, experts from Remitly Immigration Index compared 82 countries across 34 key criteria, comprehensively assessing the cost of living, personal safety, salary levels, as well as the quality of education and healthcare systems and the development of infrastructure.

This year, Switzerland topped the rankings, displacing Iceland from the top spot and cementing its status as the most attractive destination for migrants. The report’s authors attribute this success to the country’s exceptional potential for income growth, highly efficient healthcare system and extremely low crime rate.

Iceland has slipped to second place, whilst maintaining high scores for overall quality of life, environmental sustainability and the effectiveness of state support for families. Rounding out the top three is Luxembourg, whose appeal is traditionally based on high household incomes and public transport recognised as among the best in Europe. It is worth noting that the Grand Duchy ranked fifth in the global safety rankings.

The remaining places in the top five were taken by Australia, which was the only non-European country in the top five, and Germany, which reaffirmed its status as a reliable platform for building a career within the continent’s largest economy.

The top ten of the index also included Ireland, the USA, Denmark, Norway and Spain. At the same time, the compilers of the ranking analysed specific social aspects of the countries’ domestic policies. In particular, Spain was recognised as the best country to move to with a family thanks to its well-developed education system, affordable childcare costs and the length of maternity leave. In terms of cost of living, Saudi Arabia topped the global list, whilst Luxembourg ranked eighth globally, placing just behind Norway and Denmark in the European segment.
