Luxembourg is the most reading country in the EU
According to Eurostat data for 2022, 52.8% of the EU population aged 16 and over reported having read books in the last 12 months. Young people aged 16-29 read more (60.1%) than older groups: 30-54 (53.5%), 55-64 (52.6%) and 65 and over (47.2%).
In the EU, women are more likely to read books than men: 60.5% of women and 44.5% of men. This difference is also reflected in the number of books read: 28.8% of women and 24.8% of men read less than 5 books per year, 14.3% of women and 9.8% of men read between 5 and 9 books, and 17.4% of women and 9.9% of men read 10 or more books.
The highest proportions of people reading books are found in Luxembourg (75.2%), Denmark (72.1%) and Estonia (70.7%). The countries with the lowest reading rates are Romania (29.5%), Cyprus (33.1%) and Italy (35.4%).
