At the beginning of 2026, Luxembourg confirmed its status as one of the most mobile countries in the world, ranking third in the Henley Passport Index. The Grand Duchy shares this position with Denmark, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Holders of a Luxembourg passport can now travel without a visa to 186 destinations around the world, making freedom of movement a part of everyday reality for the country's citizens.

The ranking, compiled on the basis of data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), reflects not tourist preferences, but the diplomatic and political weight of the state. In the case of Luxembourg, the key factors are the strong international ties maintained by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country's reputation as a reliable and predictable partner with low political and economic risks. An additional factor is its deep integration into the European Union and global trade structures, which facilitates the conclusion of visa-free travel agreements.

The contrast between countries with high and low mobility highlights the uneven distribution of freedom of movement around the world. Countries' positions in the index largely depend on their level of security, the principle of reciprocity in visa policy, the economic situation, and the degree of diplomatic isolation. Political instability, conflicts, or sanctions lead to stricter visa regimes and severely limit citizens' opportunities to travel abroad.

Singapore remains at the top of the ranking, followed by Japan and South Korea. Against this backdrop, there has been a noticeable decline in the positions of former leaders: the United States has fallen to tenth place, which experts see as a reflection of changes in the global geopolitical balance.

The gap becomes particularly evident at the bottom of the list. Afghan citizens can visit only 24 countries without a visa, while the situation is slightly better for Syria and Iraq. The difference between the first and last lines of the ranking has reached 168 destinations, which is the highest figure in the 20-year history of the index.
