Luxembourg police to hire 1000 new officers by 2027

In 2021, Luxembourg police force grew by 9%. It was a forced response as numerous foreign criminal groups returned to the country. Also, the police faced anti-vaccination protests, a sharp increase in cybercrime, as well as a worsening criminal situation in the Gare district of the capital city.

At the same time, the number of some crimes has decreased. There were 3% fewer cases of domestic violence. And the number of drug-related violations of the law fell by 18%. But law enforcement officers involved in the areas of fraud, forgery, and bank-related crime had a hard time. During the year, the Luxembourg police opened 246 new cases in these areas.

The Luxembourg City Council wants to hire private security companies to protect law and order. Especially in the Gare district, with its alarming crime level. But a similar measure was already taken 2 years ago. And caused mass protests of local residents. The number of crimes, especially drug trafficking, has only increased since the hiring of private security guards.

Homeland Security Minister Henri Kox proposes a different solution. The police will hire a 1000 new officers over the next five years. These law enforcement officers, more professional than private security companies, will be able to battle the rising crimewave.
