Luxembourg's transportation system in figures
Eurostat has published another study on the development of the EU's transport system, accessibility and the use and demand of certain modes of transport.
Despite its small size, Luxembourg is an important element on the map of Europe. It has some of the lowest gas prices, which contributes to fuel tourism, although not as much as a few years ago. In addition, public transportation is free here, which is also important to consider when researching.
Cars
Luxembourg is one of the leaders in the number of cars. There are 678 cars per 1000 inhabitants of the country. The number is higher only in Italy — 684. At the same time, the number of electric cars registered recently amounted to 15% of the total number of registrations, which also brings Luxembourg closer to the top of the ranking, where such countries as Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and others are located.

Trains
Rail transport plays an important role in the life of the European Union as a whole and in Luxembourg in particular. Connected to three neighboring countries, Luxembourg depends on trains and the cross-border workers who use them. However, due to its small size and the prevalence of cars, the use of railways is much lower than the European average.
While the averages are about 833 kilometers of domestic travel and 47 kilometers of international travel per person, in Luxembourg they are ~450-470 kilometers of domestic travel and ~230 kilometers of international travel. The latter is due to the large number of cross-border travelers.
Maritime transport
Luxembourg's river transport is underdeveloped as it is mainly used for commercial and industrial purposes. Maritime transport is simply absent in the country for obvious reasons.
Plains
Air transport in Luxembourg is in great demand. This is largely due to the large number of business assignments, business trips and the presence of large international companies, many of which have offices or headquarters in the Grand Duchy.
At the end of 2022, Luxembourgers took an average of 6-6.5 flights per person per year. And the vast majority of tickets were bought for flights within the EU — about 80%. Another 20% of travelers chose flights outside the EU. The most common reasons were holidays or long business trips. The number of domestic flights is of course 0.
