Luxembourg supports UN reparations» resolution
The UN General Assembly voted on the resolution after the Security Council’s decision. This mechanism allows to bypass the veto of any of the participating countries, in this case, Russia. As a result, the resolution was adopted with the support of 94 countries, including Luxembourg, 14 delegations voted against it and 73 states abstained.
The document focuses on compensation for the damage that Russia caused to Ukraine during the war. Russia’s UN representative Vasily Nebenzya sharply disagrees with this. According to the diplomat, Western countries never use the concept of «reparations» to atone for their own sins. But they remember it when they need to «rob another state». According to the diplomat, reparations are an opportunity for the EU to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine.
Nebenzia also believes that such decisions could have serious consequences for the UN. Whether this is true or not, only time will tell.
