Luxembourg temporarily abandons environmental agenda to ensure that residents are fed

Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture announced that in 2023 the industry will temporarily abandon its environmental agenda and measures associated with it. This is a forced decision related to the food crisis due to the war in Ukraine.

It is still unknown how long grain supplies from Ukraine will be under threat. The countries of the Mediterranean basin and Africa are under the greatest threat. But Luxembourg will undoubtedly feel the blow in the form of price increases and shortages of certain products.

To counter these problems, the Grand Duchy will stop using two important elements of the agrarian environmental agenda: crop rotation and fallows. In 2023, most of the available land in Luxembourg will be plowed and sown. The technical details of the measure will be announced soon.

Nevertheless, the farmers will do their best to reduce the damage caused to the fields. The measure will continue for exactly one year and only for crops intended for human consumption. Between the fields there will be vast honey strips. The use of pesticides will also be limited to the necessary minimum.

In 2023, the agricultural sector of Luxembourg will experience at least one more large-scale event. The Belgian manufacturer of agricultural equipment Joskin will open a large new plant in the Grand Duchy.
