Luxembourg's water supply costs break records
According to a report by the Luxembourg Ministry of the Interior, communes' spending on water supply reached €58.6 million in 2023, the highest in a decade. This growth reflects efforts to modernise and expand infrastructure.
Cost trends
The overall 13% increase in expenditure over 2022 is due to increased investment in repairing and replacing old pipes, constructing new water lines and installing modern water metering systems.
Leading regions
The cities of Luxembourg (€17 million) and Esch-sur-Alzette (€2.9 million) are among the largest investors. Significant investments have also been made in the Sanem (€2.8 million) and Remich (€1.7 million) regions.
Features of expenditure
The capital is implementing a programme to modernise its water supply network, which includes the renewal of large main pipelines. In Remich, investments are aimed at improving water quality and creating reserve sources.
These investments are aimed at ensuring a stable water supply and reducing water losses in the networks. The modernisation of infrastructure also contributes to the resilience of the system in the face of climate change.
