Municipalities owe €1 billion to the state
The end of the year was signified by the publishing of the debts of 102 municipalities of the country. The overwhelming majority of them reported impressive debts to the state. They emerge because of the loans taken by the municipalities for the development of infrastructure.
Only 11 municipalities do not have debts. These are the city of Luxembourg, Berdorf, Colmar-Berg, Koerich, Manternach, Niederanven, Putscheid, Reckange-sur-Mess, Schuttrange, Stadtbredimus and Wormeldange.
Wiltz owes the most - as much as 66.4 million euros. Differdange (51.1 million euros) and Esch-sur-Alzette (33.4 million euros), one of the largest municipalities in Luxembourg, are also in the top ten.
Despite a rather unfortunate situation, the lending mechanism usually operates in such a way that the municipalities are not caught up in a debt spiral.
